I wake at 6:04am. The sun is up and shining in defiance. I walk down the hall, I plug in my laptop at the kitchen table and fire up the coffee machine...caffeine enters the blood shortly thereafter and I being to write:
I think I might have been part of some sort of quantum physics miracle yesterday. Stephen and I had gone out to lunch after dropping Luigi at the vet to have his teeth cleaned, and as we were driving home we were nearly murdered by a new breed of lunatic driver.
I had stopped at a red light, and as it turned green I began to accelerate. As I glanced in the rear-view mirror my heart nearly stopped. A homicidal/suicidal maniac, behind the wheel of a silver bullet of a car, was careening directly at us. In the nick of space and time the car seemed to swerve around us, practically clipping us on the left side at the trunk at no less than sixty miles per hour.
In a millisecond or two I moved my car to the left by no more than an inch or two; not enough to make a difference...or so it seemed. Then for a few milliseconds I was certain we were going to die. What felt like a very long time but couldn't have been more than an eighth of a second, the car seemed to pass by me, or was it through me...without making contact with a single molecule. It was as if time/space bent like a liquid; It was indescribable.
The car continued its high speed as the lunatic behind its wheel accelerated even more and then disappeared from sight onto the QEW highway on-ramp. I could not take a licence plate; I could not even register what sort of car it was. The entire incident took no longer than seven seconds from beginning to end.
And so a new day begins...within an inch or two.
